PM-WANI

Prime Minister WiFi Access Network Interface abbreviated as PM-WANI is a proposal of the Department of Telecom (DoT) which was approved by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 9th December 2020. The aim of this government initiative is to unleash a massive WiFi network and expedite the proliferation of broadband internet services to provide last-mile connectivity. The PM-WANI project will help PDO’s registered under any PDOA to implement WiFi hotspots at different locations like grocery shops, restaurants, local stores, residential areas, government offices and other public places across the country. PMWANI will be beneficial for all key players like PDO, PDOA, App provider and WiFi Users in the WANI ecosystem.

PM-WANI Framework WorkFlow

  • PDO’s registered under any PDOA can set up PM-WANI compliant Wi-Fi Access Points.
  • End users can view nearby PDO Access points in WANI Mobile Application after registering with their mobile number and OTP authentication.
  • End users can choose any of the PDO SSID displayed in the mobile app and they will be redirected to the web portal of PDOA, which displays plans & tariffs.
  • The PDOA will authenticate the End users and after the successful payment transaction, WiFi access will be provided through PDO access points.
  • PDOA will store and manage details like user data usage, plan validity, and more.

Key Players in PM-WANI Architecture

  1. PDO:blic Data Office will establish, maintain, and operate PM-WANI compliant Wi-Fi Access Points and provide last-mile connectivity to deliver Broadband services to subscribers by procuring internet bandwidth from telecom service providers and/ or internet service providers. For PDO, PM-WANI will not just offer additional revenue, it will attract more customers and promote your location. Making your store a PDO access point will be a better approach for business branding/advertising.
  2. PDO Aggregator: Public Data Office Aggregator will provide aggregation services such as authorization and accounting to PDOs, thereby facilitating PDOs in providing services to the end consumer.
  3. App Provider: App Provider will develop an Application to register users and discover and display PM-WANI compliant Wi-Fi hotspots in the proximity for accessing the internet service and also authenticate the potential Broadband users.
  4. Central Registry: Central Registry will maintain the details of App Providers, PDOAs, and PDOs. It is currently maintained by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).
  5. WiFi Users: WiFi End users can connect to the PDO access point after registering using the mobile app and choosing a valid plan of PDOA from the web portal. The users can connect to WiFi easily from anywhere by spending comparatively less.

PDOA Key Responsibilities

  • The PDOA will register PDO Wi-Fi Access Points along with SSIDs and locations.
  • PDOA will authorize users based on the requests.
  • Create tariff for subscribers and manage usage of each subscriber.
  • All complaints of users will be addressed/ handled by the PDOA.
  • Payment gateway integrated with PDOA captive portal for online payment transaction.
  • Multiple PDOAs can enter into roaming agreement for enabling their subscribers uninterrupted WiFi Access.
